In Focus The Manchester Leadership Programme University of Manchester Careers Blog

In Focus The Manchester Leadership Programme University of Manchester Careers Blog Enhance your university experience with The Manchester Leadership Programme What is the Manchester Leadership Programme? The Manchester Leadership Programme (MLP) is a prestigious interdisciplinary module which offers a unique combination of academic units and volunteering. There are two parts to the MLP: a Leadership in Action academic unit and accredited volunteering. Students who successfully complete both elements receive the Manchester Leadership Award. The level of award attained is based on the amount of volunteering undertaken (20 hours for a bronze award, 40 hours for a silver award and 60 hours for a gold award). What will I learn? Whilst on the MLP you will learn the importance of leadership that promotes social, economic and environmental sustainability. You will gain an understanding of what it means to be a leader in the 21st century, and the opportunity to hear from leaders who are influencing change in the world around you, including some of the university’s leading academics and high profile leaders from the public, private and voluntary sectors. “The MLP course was an inspiring module. I expected a unit challenging my beliefs, broadening my views, and inspiring me to take actions, and that is what I got.” (School of Education and MLP student) Why should I take the MLP? The MLP allows you to take a module that enables you to enhance your university experience and give something back to the wider community. You will get the opportunity to hear from experts from a wide variety of fields, and work with students from all faculties across the university. Most importantly the MLP offers you the chance to complete accredited volunteering and take part in a wide range of exciting voluntary opportunities. “The MLP gave me a depth of insight into leadership and a level of self-discovery that you simply can’t get from a text book” (Linguistics MLP student) What sort of volunteering can I take part in? Volunteering is a great way to make a difference. As well as being fun, it can also help to give you a great sense of achievement; help you develop skills that employers look for; and make a positive impact on the wider community. The Volunteering Team organise regular volunteering events for MLP students throughout semester time, as well as helping you to find opportunities that interest you. There are lots of different ways you can volunteer from mentoring in local schools; fundraising for local and national charities; carrying out environmental campaigns and working with vulnerable adults. The opportunities are endless! The MLP Facebook page contains lots of MLP volunteering photos to give you a good idea of the sorts of volunteering opportunities you could be getting involved with. You can also read more about past MLP student volunteering experiences. How can taking the MLP help boost my employability Whilst on the MLP you will have lots of opportunities to develop the key skills that employers like to see on CV’s such as: team work; debating and influencing skills; project management; communication; and time management. Year on year the graduate job market is becoming increasingly more competitive, so taking such a unique programme can help you stand out from the other candidates. Am I eligible to take the MLP? Second and third year undergraduate students with a free choice option or equivalent may be eligible to take the MLP. However, some programmes are unable to take MLP or some versions. You will need to contact your school to confirm whether or not you are eligible to take it. How do I apply? Acceptance onto The Manchester Leadership Programme is competitive so all prospective students need to apply. You must apply by completing an online application form www.mlp.manchester.ac.uk/apply. Some simple steps to calm the final year flusters. University of Manchester Careers Blog

Some simple steps to calm the final year flusters. University of Manchester Careers Blog I am certain that a lot of graduates will agree with me when I say that the final year of your degree is full of blood sweat and tears (metaphorically speaking that is). It is the year that you pull your socks up, knuckle down and really give it your all so that when June comes around and you put on your graduation gown you are filled with pride. But, as if final years didn’t have enough to stress about with their degree, there is a certain ominous 7 word sentence which plagues the mind of a lot of students. That is…         What am I going to do next? *Runs away quickly* Fear not final years, these 7 words dont have to fill you with fear and stress. There are tons of things you can be doing to address this question early on in the year so that when June comes around you have some positive thought-out options, rather than a dark abyss of uncertainty. The first thing to note is that just like Rome wasn’t built in a day, it’s unlikely that you will wake up one day with your career path planned out. If you don’t know what you want to do then it’s a good idea to take some steps early on which may lead you in the right direction. Instead of focussing on the things that you don’t know, try writing a list of things that you like and dislike. It might be as simple as ‘I like engaging with people’, ‘I don’t like working in a lab’, ‘I like the Friday feeling’. Narrowing down your tastes can drastically help your job search. If you like the idea of the Friday feeling then perhaps a 9-5 job may suit you more than one where you will have to work weekends. Another good move is to start reflecting on yourself and thinking about what skills you have. If you are not an international student this may seems a bit weird to you as it goes against all British customs to actually praise yourself about an attribute you have (?!). But starting to think about yourself in a positive way can help you work out what sort of sectors may suit you and where your talents may be able to flourish. If self-reflection seems too alien to you then ask your family and friends as they may be able to give you an insight into what you’re good at (a far more British way of dealing with it). Network, network, network. Whenever you’re faced with an opportunity to talk to a professional then go for it. You never know, if you decide in April that banking is the career for you, you’ll be grateful that you charmed Jane from Barclays at the Big Careers Fair back in October. Speaking to people is absolutely the best way to find out information about a specific sector and may even lead you onto some work experience if you’re lucky. Alternatively, if you don’t like the idea of reflecting on yourself quite yet why not try doing a bit of volunteering or getting a part time job? Exposing yourself to new environments may be just the push you need to help you explore different paths for the future. Remember though that you will have a lot of work on at uni, so don’t burn yourself out by working part time too much! You see, there really is no need to tremble at the knees when your relatives bombard you with questions about the future during your trip home for Christmas. The world really is your oyster, so get cracking on breaking open the shell and getting on track to finding an absolute pearl of a job. How Will Marriage Impact Your Career

How Will Marriage Impact Your Career If you’re due to get married or you’re just carefully considering the future, one thing you might be thinking about is how marriage will impact your career. Although the two usually develop separately, there are many out there who will tell you that one definitely impacts the other. Having a bad day at work could impact your mood and impact your relationship, and having an argument with your spouse could easily make it difficult for you to concentrate at work. However, marriage could potentially affect your career in other ways too. Your Mood Think about your mood for a second. Do you enjoy your job? What mood are you usually in when you’re at work? How about when you’re at home? Chances are, no matter how hard you try, your mood is going to be dictated by these things. If you have a great morning with your spouse, chances are, you’ll start the day off right and have a great day at work. You’ll feel focused and productive. If you have a bad start to the day, your work may suffer. If you have a rubbish day at work, you might get home to your spouse, complain, and end up in some kind of argument. These two things do tend to impact the other quite a lot. To stop this from happening, try to become more aware of the things you allow to control your mood. Many people say the most important career decision you’ll ever make is the person you marry. More Perks Want more perks at work? Getting married could be the way to do it. Some people say that married people at work get given extra hours to do things like see children’s plays, whereas single people don’t tend to enjoy things like this. Who knew that wearing your titanium wedding bands could be a huge advantage? Thought Of More Favorably Although you shouldn’t worry about your marital status and what others think of it, people who are married tend to be thought of more favorably in the workplace. People could start fighting your corner for a promotion, and may even trust you with more responsibility. Make More Money Married people even tend to make more money than single people. It isn’t exactly fair. After all, do you think you work any harder now that you’re married? Probably not, but studies show that it does make a difference to how much you earn. Married women earn 4% more than single women. Married men earn 7% more than single men. If you want a pay rise, it could be time to tie the knot! If you’re looking at marriage from a financial perspective, it can be totally worth it. Bear in mind that sometimes, the only reason you may get treated differently at work is because you’re giving off a certain ‘vibe’. If you’re envious of married workers and talk about being single as if it’s some horrible disease, people might just pussyfoot around you. Become more assertive and confident when it comes to your marital status and you won’t have much to worry about.

Go to LinkedIn You will just need to take into consideration what you have learned from others so far, so you can decide what about you worthies evaluation.Remember that the secret of a winner resume is offering the best and the right amount of informat ion and nothing else. Do You Work With Integrity and Positivity - Hire Imaging

Do You Work With Integrity and Positivity - Hire Imaging You may be thinking of pursuing opportunities outside your current employer organization, or perhaps you’re wanting a promotion where you’re at! TalentKeepers, a reputable firm providing employee-retention solutions, conducted research on what leads people to join, as well as leave, an organization. The top three reasons people join an organization by priority, are: Organizational factors (pay, benefits, reputation) Job factors (duties, schedule, training) Leader factors (trustworthy, coach, flexible) What’s really interesting is that these priorities are reversed when people leave an organization. Cited as the top reason people leave an organization is LEADER FACTORS. What are the takeaways from this research? First, when making a career move, go the extra mile in learning about how your boss manages. You may decide it’s a deal-breaker if your manager-to-be (either in an internal or outside move) isn’t trustworthy, isn’t flexible, or doesn’t operate from a coaching mindset. Second, as you move forward in your career, you will often have the opportunity to manage people (if you don’t already). Your success in talent retention will align closely with your trustworthiness, ability to be flexible, and inclination toward coaching. Here are some reflections to ponder and gauge your integrity, positivity and trustworthiness in the work world. They are aimed at addressing these two points: I keep my word. My managers, peers, customers, vendors, etc. trust me. Which of these are true for you? And if so, can you expand on why or how they are true? When a situation is murky in terms of ethics, I take the honorable route and do what is right. I do not take credit for others’ ideas or work. I regularly try to do a great job, not just an okay job. I accept compliments for a well-done job, and do not disagree with or ignore that compliment out of embarrassment or incorrect humility. If there is a difference of opinion, I don’t insist that others agree with me, but purposefully try to understand their perspective. If I make a mistake â€" either intentional or unintentional â€" I quickly admit it and do not try to push accountability to other people or some other factor. I would not be regretful of any conversations I’ve had if they were to have been recorded or documented. I have a reputation for delivering my work or projects on or before the deadline. I am resilient and adapt to change positively and quickly. I easily adapt to other work assignments. My mindset sees possibilities first versus problems. I see opportunities versus barriers. My supervisors and colleagues would describe me as optimistic, generally upbeat, and enjoyable to work with. I care and think about how my actions will affect or be perceived by others. I offer to help others when they need it, without compromising the quality of my individual productivity. I prepare for meetings by reviewing the agenda, thinking of solutions to issues, and having needed information ready. When a manager or coworker asks me for information, I think about why the information is needed and offer additional resources that might be helpful. I am respectful of my employer’s physical space and time. I never take items that are not returned, and I don’t use employer time for personal activities. Here’s another brainstorming tip to gauge your integrity and positivity work reputation: Think of a person whom you admire and respect very much. This might be someone you know or someone you don’t know. It could be a great business or political leader, author, community activist, tireless volunteer, and so on. This person may be living or deceased. Choose someone whose approval you would be proud to have. Now, pretend this person will see every product you create, every email you write, and every word you speak. Would your “invisible boss” be proud of you on a day-to-day basis? I always love to hear from you! Please comment below.
